I know this is the time of year when all we think about New Years Resolutions. There’s so much diet and weight loss talk on tv, in magazines and on the internet… how can one not think about it? I don’t like Resolutions. Though I do think it is important to have goals to better yourself, whether it’s to exercise, live healthier, or fix bad habits. But the pressure, hype and unrealistic promises out there can be too much. And judging by the emails and tweets many of you have sent me so far this new year, everyone has hope about 2013 — yet you have anxiety about the pressure to get in shape and make big changes, and fear that you’ll be back where you were in a few short weeks (if you’re not there already). My best advice is to tell you to just relax, try your best… Read more

As I sat down to write today, the words just couldn’t come. This has been a month filled with many emotions: grief, sadness, hope and happiness. It began with the unexpected death of a close family friend, and then to hear of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook in Newtown last week is nothing short of deep sadness. Yet in-between this sadness I’ve had happy moments of re-connecting with old friends, my mom flying in to visit for a few days, a call from a neighbor asking for some help with her 94 year old father (which I gladly did, yet reminded me of how precious my body is many years younger), to spending more quality time with other family members and friends. These moments have allowed me to reflect on what really matters in life… And it’s not the size of your jeans. It’s not what the number… Read more

As someone who helps women with their eating, I surprise people all the time when I’m at a holiday party. They see me eating the brie with soft crusty bread (and she’s going back for more!), then later headed to the dessert table for a few holiday cookies (how could she?!). They can’t help wonder how on earth I do it — keep my weight in check and help other women do the same. The trick is to avoid all the typical holiday diet “advice” — avoid certain foods, eat before the party, only take one serving. Instead, you need to approach the holidays (and frankly, ALL year) with an easier and softer approach for both body and mind. Here are some of my favorite suggestions: 1) Make every bite count. Do you want to fill up on all the appetizers and then not have room for dessert? … Read more

As the weather gets cooler, there’s nothing more comforting, healthy and filling than soup. I love homemade soup! Actually, homemade soup is the only soup I eat. I just don’t like the canned stuff. And soup is EASY to make. I’m someone who doesn’t like to spend hours in the kitchen. I like recipes that are easy, have simple ingredients, and don’t take much time (or talent!). So here’s one of my favorite recipes for Simple & Easy Curried Carrot Soup. Don’t let the “curried” scare you off. The bit of curry powder gives it just a nice hint of flavor that makes people go “mmm” but not know what the secret ingredient is. I’ve found that different curries have different strength….so I suggest the first time you make it, use the recommended 1 teaspoon, and go light on the teaspoon! Then once you’ve made it a few times you can… Read more

Thanksgiving is often a stressful time for many of us — “Should I have the turkey without the gravy? Can I really stick to the veggies and not have some of the mashed potatoes made with real butter?” It’s like we’re in a constant dilemma all day long. (by the way, I love real butter and that’s all I use…no margarine in my fridge!) We worry about how many calories are in each serving, or can we nibble on appetizers without going overboard, or can we really just take one serving of everything? So little time, yet so much on our minds. In the past I wrote about How to Enjoy Thanksgiving Without the Guilt, which is a good read for those of you worrying about feeling guilty after eating a bit more than you normally do, and how to deal with the voices in your head telling you to eat… Read more

Yesterday I had my annual check-up with my doctor. As is the normal routine, the first thing the nurse does is check my height (though it hasn’t changed in 20 years!) and then had me step on the scale. Well, I had a surprise. But to be honest, the surprise didn’t “hit me” until I came home later that day took a look at the computer print-out with all of my results. Since my exam last year, I’ve lost 10 pounds. Now ten pounds may not seem a lot, but I don’t need to lose any weight at all. And I didn’t try to either. In fact, the last 12 years or so — thanks to developing and following my Eat Without Guilt principles, which include being a more mindful + intuitive eater — I’ve been at a very healthy weight. I no longer overeat, or binge, comfort eat, or… Read more

If you want to learn more about Intuitive Eating and making peace with food and your body, read on… I’m going to be interviewed on the “Stress Less Radio” show TODAY. And you can listen-in from the comfort of your home, right on the internet or via iTunes. A few years ago I helped a life coach, JJ Frederickson, make peace with her body and food AND maintain a healthy weight — something she had struggled with for YEARS. This new-found freedom changed her life in so many positive ways that she asked me to be a guest on her radio show to talk about intuitive eating…..and how it can help you too. The interview is being broadcast TODAY on the Amazing Women of Power Talk 24/7 Radio Network – The World’s Leading Positive Programming Network. So if you’re interested in learning more about the power of Intuitive Eating, then… Read more

I struggled with weight and my relationship with food for as long as I can remember. I was using food to escape from the discomfort of my emotional life – but of course back then I called it ‘lack of willpower.’ I understand the impulse to want to eat the cookies. In the moment it feels like a convenient escape, but the loneliness, the anxiety, the sadness and fear are still there after the cookies are gone. Food was my drug of choice. And for so many of us, that ‘addiction’ manifests itself on the outside as unwanted weight…a visible reminder of our relationship with food. And it manifests on the inside with feelings of failure, lower self-confidence, and the internal turmoil at every meal (and a lot of turmoil in-between meals). But this struggle with food and your weight — takes you away from your sober, clear minded, autonomous… Read more

When people hear what I do for a living, they always want to know my top tips for long-term weight loss. So today I’m going to give you some. I wrote out my top 10 tips, but it became way too long….so I’ve broken it down into two parts. Here is the first part, my top five: 1. Eat only when you are hungry. This means stop eating the minute you feel full. Anytime you eat beyond fullness, you are eating not because you are hungry, but for some other reason. So what does it really mean to eat when you are hungry? If you are in the middle of a sandwich, or a chicken dinner, and you are no longer hungry – you stop eating. You can save what you don’t eat for later. It means leaving food on a plate if you’ve had enough. It means eating only… Read more
