Beautiful story! This means a lot to me personally near Mother's Day since my own mom (who unexpectedly passed away in 2003) had a profound influence on my body image. I equated the word "diet" with "good" since age 11. I have always been slim yet curvy (some would call this ideal), but my mother encouraged me to diet regardless of how I looked--it was her own strategy.

Ironically, it wasn't until I finally let go of the perma-diet ideal that I finally lost those last few pounds and learned to love my body and my food again!

Thanks again for sharing your experiences.

Thanks for this great interview! This sounds like a fabulous book. My mom was so beautiful and I loved watching her get dressed up to go out somewhere fancy or perform in a community show. Yet, she was always "on a diet" or talking about how she was too fat. Today, I work daily with myself, and with my clients, on loving the bodies we have. My most important tool is choosing to treat myself well, with love and care. One woman I worked with shared this mantra "As a precious, divine being, I love and nourish myself." I have it taped up where I can see it, on my monitor.
