Darya - thanks for your comments and insight! I too hope we can establish a healthy and nurturing relationship with food, and part of my mission is to help make it possible!

JP - glad I helped you become more aware. We all eat for comfort from time-to-time (though some do it more than others), but being aware is important. Helps to recognize when we're using food for something other than nourishment. And if we do eat a bit more once in a while, that's okay -- the key being "once in a while."

This is a really sad phenomenon, especially because these children have so little responsibility for the state they are in. Yet they will have to deal with it their whole lives.

Personally I use food as a source of health and joy, and I hope as a society/culture we can learn to reestablish a nurturing relationship with food.

Thanks for the thoughtful post.

As I read your article, I just finished dinner and grabbed a roll, to munch on, while I was sitting at my laptop. Midway through, I started asking myself the very questions you posed. "What am I hungry for?" I had enough on my dinner plate. I felt satisfied (but not too full)... and curiously, I grabbed that roll. Did I NEED it? No. I think you just helped me to become more aware of the "mindless" eating I do sometimes... for comfort.

Anyway, I think your article was enlightening, and pointed out some very important questions.

Thank You.
